Jackson County sees COVID-19 outbreaks in schools, nursing homes

Mail Tribune - 1/13/2022

Jan. 13—The Oregon Health Authority recorded COVID-19 cases scattered across work sites, nursing homes, child care centers and schools in Jackson County in its latest weekly outbreak report.

With eight reported COVID-19 cases, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office is the only business or government agency in the county with a reported outbreak, according to the report.

To protect privacy, OHA only reports outbreaks involving at least five cases at work sites with at least 30 workers.

Eight Jackson County nursing homes had outbreaks that together totaled 45 cases, OHA said.

The cases were at Lakeland Senior Living (four cases), Hearthstone Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (nine cases), Brookdale Ashland (three cases), Avamere at Three Fountains (three cases), Avamere at Waterford Assisted Living Facility (three cases), Bonaventure of Medford Assisted Living (four cases), Rogue Valley Manor (six cases) and Avamere Health Services of Rogue Valley (three cases).

Although the nursing homes are reporting cases, they didn't have new COVID-19-related deaths, according to the OHA weekly report.

Across the U.S., COVID-19 vaccination is slashing the death rate among nursing home residents, who tend to be among the most vulnerable because of age and health problems.

Before widespread vaccination and booster shots, 34,094 nursing home residents had COVID-19 the week of Dec. 20, 2020, and 6,219 residents died from the illness, according to the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living that represent 14,000 nursing homes.

After widespread vaccination and even with the spread of the highly contagious omicron variant of the virus, 32,061 nursing home residents had COVID-19 during the week of Jan. 9 of this year and only 645 died from COVID, the association and center said.

Among child care settings, the OnTrack Rogue Valley HOME/Mom's Program reported an outbreak of four cases, and Rainbow's End Early Learning Center reported six cases.

OHA only releases data on child care settings with least two COVID-19 cases and a capacity of at least 16 students.
