Akron court starts new program for people with developmental disabilities

Akron Beacon Journal - 1/8/2022

Akron Municipal Court has started a new program aimed at helping people with developmental disabilities who run afoul of the law.

The Connect Program is geared toward people with autism, Down syndrome, communication disorders and other developmental disabilities.

Judge Ron Cable started the program late last year and it so far has two participants. Participants must have a developmental disability or be receiving services from a developmental disabilities board.

Those who take part will be placed on probation for one year and be required to attend court sessions and medical appointments, engage in recommended programs and take prescribed medications.

Cable and Akron Magistrate Jennifer Towell, who serves on the program's advisory board, each have a child with a developmental disability.

Cable recently was named the court's administrative/presiding judge for this year, a distinction he held in 2021 as well. The administrative/presiding judge oversees the court's administration, docket and court calendar.
