Lexington has 76 new COVID-19 cases over weekend, new death at nursing home

Lexington Herald-Leader - 7/6/2020

Jul. 6--The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department reported 52 new COVID-19 cases and one new death from Saturday and Sunday. The total number of new cases from the weekend was 76.

There were just 24 new cases reported Saturday morning, a rare low point in new cases after the city saw all five of its top five single-day increases within the three weeks prior, excluding single-day surges caused by the Federal Medical Center outbreak.

The death reported over the weekend was a nursing home resident at Pine Meadows, health department spokesman Kevin Hall confirmed. That's the sixth coronavirus-related resident death from Pine Meadows.

The death reported prior to the holiday weekend on Friday was Daniel Morris, 70, a Federal Medical Center inmate, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Morris tested positive on May 12. Morris was serving a prison sentence of nearly four years for conspiracy to commit program fraud and mail fraud, money laundering conspiracy, and aggravated identity theft, according to the bureau of prisons. He had been in custody at the FMC since Dec. 18, 2018.

June was Lexington's worst COVID-19 month, with record numbers reported in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, according to health department data. Two of the five largest single-day case increases came in the last full week of June.

Data over the last week showed slight increases in cases and hospitalizations compared to the last full week of June.

There was a slight decrease in deaths. The six from June 22-28 were tied for the most in a single week.

Medical experts warned that COVID-19's worst effects would be felt by older populations, but cases surged in Lexington's younger populations in June, more than doubling in the 34 and under age groups compared to May. New cases decreased slightly over the last two weeks in that age group, compared to a slight increase in Lexington's 55 and older population.
