Man 'badly burned' in nursing home fire that hospitalized three

South Florida Sun Sentinel - 11/3/2018

Nov. 02--Two residents and a nurse were hospitalized after fire broke out at a Plantation nursing home late Thursday night.

Investigators found that one resident was apparently smoking in bed, Plantation Fire Department Battalion Chief Joel Gordon said Friday.

That man, in his 70s, was badly burned and flown to University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center for treatment, Gordon said.

His roommate had minor burns and smoke inhalation, and a nurse also inhaled smoke during the evacuation of West Broward Rehabilitation and Healthcare, at 7751 W. Broward Blvd.

Those patients were taken to Westside Regional Medical Center, Gordon said.

The fire began about 11 p.m. and prompted evacuation of about 55 patients from the 120-bed facility.

"Only the east wing was evacuated, then about 90 minutes later we were able to return most patients to their rooms," Gordon said.

Arriving firefighters discovered fire in the resident's room and heavy smoke in a hallway. What appeared to be a charred mattress could be seen outside the facility while rescue crews were still at the nursing home.

Correspondent Jim Donnelly contributed to this report.
