Hospital offering diabetes prevention program, health fair

Columbus Telegram - 8/18/2018

Aug. 18--Columbus Community Hospital is offering area residents the opportunity to participate in two upcoming events that focus on overall wellness and health.

From 7-8 a.m. Tuesday and 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, those interested are encouraged to attend a National Diabetes Prevention Program held in the Prairie Room at CCH.

The event is being held in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), released information from the hospital says.

The National DPP has been proven to help people lose weight and prevent or delay their risk of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. The program requires a yearlong commitment that includes more than 16 sessions for the first six months and sessions once or twice a month for the remaining six months.

Millions of Americans have pre-diabetes and many of these people do not know it. People with pre-diabetes have blood glucose (sugar) levels higher than normal, but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. People with pre-diabetes are more likely than other people to get type 2 diabetes. This can lead to serious health complications including heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure or the loss of toes, feet and legs.

At risk individuals include adults who are overweight, have a family history of diabetes, were diagnosed with gestational diabetes, pre-diabetes, borderline diabetes or had a baby weighing more than 9 pounds, released information says.

From 7-11 a.m.Sept. 8, the hospital is hosting its 15th annual Tune-Up for Life Community Health Fair at the Columbus Wellness Center, released information says. The health fair features free screenings for blood pressure, body composition, bone mineral density, colorectal cancer, flexibility, hearing, strength and vision.

Discounted health tests and vaccines will be available, some of which include: atrial fibrillation, abdominal aortic ultrasound, peripheral arterial disease, carotid artery ultrasound, seasonal flu shots, pneumonia vaccinations and much more.
