Fulda woman pleads guilty to financial theft from nursing home

July 18--FULDA -- A rural Fulda woman has pleaded guilty to stealing funds from the nonprofit nursing home where she had worked.

Amy Hakeneis, 43, pleaded guilty Monday in Murray County District Court to felony theft -- divert corporate property. If sentenced in accordance to the plea agreement, six other charges accusing Hakeneis of stealing $146,924.34 from Maple Lawn Senior Care in Fulda over a two-and-a-half-year period would be dismissed.

The plea agreement calls for a presumptive stay of executed sentence for up to 20 years of supervised probation. She would presumptively be sentenced to 180 days in jail, which could be staggered in 30-day increments over a six-year period. The segments beyond the initial 30-day period may be waived with recommendation by probation and if restitution is paid for that year, the agreement states.

The Murray County Attorney's Office filed charges in January accusing Hakeneis of misusing the company's Hy-Vee credit account for personal purchases of nearly $150,000 in gift cards from December 2013 to March 2016. She was terminated from her position in May 2016.

Her sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 20 in Murray County District Court.

Hakeneis is scheduled to appear today in Nobles County District Court on six pending felony card fraud charges, which were filed in early February based on the same investigation.
