St. John Medical Center earns award for stroke treatment

PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center earned an award this week for its stroke care from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, according to a press release from the hospital.

St. John Medical Center received the "Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award" for stroke patient treatment that meets nationally accepted, evidence-based standards and recommendations, according to the hospital.

"We're really proud to be recognized for the care we provide our stroke patients," Stroke Program Manager Katie Johnson said in the press release. "There are a lot of important steps that go into providing excellent stroke care. Certainly we need to get our patients the right medication in a timely manner, but we also need help people understand how to better manage their health, and work with them to create a follow-up plan that works for them."

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
