Normal and Not Normal Aging a topic at Back to Basics

Pilot-Independent, The (Walker, MN) - 2/12/2016

As we age - and we are all aging - how do we know what is normal and what is not?

Faith in Action for Cass County sponsored a presentation Jan. 25 at the Back to Basics Conference in Pine River on Normal versus Not Normal Aging. Using a Positive Approach to Care based on the work of Teepa Snow, this workshop helped participants to recognize and understand "normal" and "not normal" aging by learning to identify the signs of dementia and developing better observational skills to recognize and intervene effectively when behavioral challenges occur.

Executive Director Theresa Eclov of Faith in Action and Caregiver Consultant Krisie Barron emphasized the value of matching helping behaviors to the needs and retained abilities of a person with dementia in order to promote a sense of control and self-direction. Additional workshops will be planned for the Walker and Hackensack areas in the near future.

The annual Back to Basics focuses on building sustainable and living communities. This year's event included keynote speaker Thomas Fisher of the U of MN Minnesota Design Center speaking on "Design our Way to a Better World" and dozens of informational workshop and vendor opportunities. If you missed the event, you can get information at www.happydancingturtle.org.

Faith in Action for Cass County is happy to bring its presentations to you and your organizations any time of the year. Topics include Resilient Aging, Preparing to Care: A Key to Choice for Seniors, Stress Management for Caregivers, The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease, Radical Hospitality Creates Better Communities, and Caregiving in a Nutshell.
