BRIEF: Augustan's nursing home death under investigation

Feb. 05--The death of a 73-year-old Augusta man in a Jefferson County nursing home is under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Carrol L. Hyler, a retired businessman, died Jan. 21 at Pruitthealth in Louisville. He was buried six days later, but not before an autopsy was conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta.. The Jefferson County coroner confirmed Hyler's autopsy was conducted but did not specify the reason.

On Feb. 1, a GBI representative confirmed the case involving Hyler's death remains open. Officials did not confirm what circumstances led to the investigation.

Hyler, a cycling enthusiast was active in his community. He was past president of the Olde Town Neighborhood Association and once sought political office, coming within seven votes of winning an Augusta City Council seat in 1993.
