Break out your pink!

October is breast cancer awareness month, a time to help raise funds to fight breast cancer and increase awareness about early detection.

Here you'll find some events around the Emerald Coast that will help you with both of those goals!

1. Participate in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is an annual event that raises funds and awareness to fight breast cancer.

It will be held on Oct. 17 at Uptown Station, 99 Eglin Parkway N.E. in Fort Walton Beach.

Registration will open at 8 a.m. The noncompetitive 3.1-mile walk will start at 9 a.m.

You can help at this event by starting or joining a team and raising funds, sponsoring a team or walker, or volunteering. Learn more or create your team at www.makingstrides.acsevents.org.

Funds raised at this event go to breast cancer research and programs. Last year, more than 5,000 participants raised more than $125,000.

2. Volunteer.

Volunteers are needed for these American Cancer Society programs:

-- Road to Recovery -- This program pairs cancer patients with a driver who can take them to and from treatment.

--Look Good Feel Better -- This workshop helps women deal with some of the physical side effects of breast cancer and treatment with things like makeup tutorials and tips on what to do when facing hair loss.

--Reach to Recovery -- This program pairs people facing breast cancer or a possible diagnosis and their families with a survivor.

Call 244-3813 and ask for Diane Maldonado to volunteer.

3. Have fun at Pinktoberfest.

Help to fund mammograms while also having fun at Pinktoberfest.

The festival, sponsored by the Pink Pirates, will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 10 in Navarre Park.

There will be live music, craft and food vendors, raffles and a silent auction.

All proceeds will benefit Fore Her, a non-profit that provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients.

There will also be entertainment by David Seering, food samples, hole-in-one prizes, breakfast before tee off provided by Sunset Bay Cafe, lunch after the outing, a silent auction and more.

The tournament starts at 10 a.m. at Windswept Dunes Golf Club, 11 Clubhouse Drive in Freeport. The $65 entry includes golf, range use and lunch.
