Ex-nursing home employee accused of stealing from resident

News Courier (Athens, AL) - 8/31/2015

Aug. 30--A former employee of a Mobile nursing home has been arrested for allegedly stealing from a resident by using a credit card he had given her to buy him snacks.

Latrice Michelle Robinson, 42, of Mobile, was arrested Thursday by Mobile County Sheriff's deputies.

The attorney general's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit presented evidence to a Mobile County grand jury resulting in an indictment on June 17 formally charging Robinson with one count of second-degree theft of property and 14 counts of fraudulent use of a credit or debit card, according to a spokesperson for Attorney General Luther Strange.

Robinson, who was a certified nursing assistant at Sea Breeze Healthcare Center, is accused of using a patient's credit/debit card to steal more than $1,000 from the resident. He had given Robinson the credit/debit card to purchase snacks and supplies for his room.

Over the course of the next two days, however, Robinson allegedly used the card 14 times to buy her own personal items. She also allegedly made several trips to an ATM for cash. She did not have the resident's permission to do so, and a review of his bank statement alerted him to the theft almost immediately, according to the attorney general's office.

When the resident contacted Robinson to return his card, she had not bought any of the items he had requested. Robinson was immediately terminated by Sea Breeze administration and an investigation was initiated.

Both charges are class C felonies that carry a possible prison sentence of a year and a day to up to 10 years in state prison.

Strange commended his Medicaid Fraud Control Unit for its investigation and Sea Breeze Healthcare Center for its assistance in the investigation.
