National Disability Employment Awareness Month to be celebrated

Sept. 30--Goodwill Industries of Southern Ohio will host a dinner in conjunction with National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) for October. NDEAM is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities.
Kyle Davis, vocational rehabilitation manager at Goodwill Industries of Southern Ohio, said NDEAM is a celebration that is very important.
"This event is held in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This will be the first event like this, and we plan on hosting it annually," Davis said. "We are having a dinner to celebrate the hiring of persons with disabilities. There are a lot of employers that have worked with us in hiring our clients."
His said the upcoming dinner and recognition of NDEAM has a dual purpose.
"There are actually two purposes for the event, one is to help us to raise funds to improve the community by helping community members find employment and train for various levels of employment," he said. "Also, it is an opportunity to educate employers on the incentive programs. We are actually having a state employee to come down and talk about different incentives that the federal and state give to employers for hiring individuals."
He also said that an auction would be held during the event to help Goodwill Industries to further the mission.
According to Davis, the mission of Goodwill Industries of Southern is to improve the quality of life for people who are disabled and disadvantaged by promoting self-sufficiency through our training and employment programs.
The dinner will be held Oct. 2, 2014. Although the RSVP deadline to attend the dinner has passed, donations to can still be made to Goodwill Industries of Southern Ohio by www.goodwillsouthernohio.org
