Chamber Chatter: $11 million Towers Nursing Home opens in Smithville

Towers Nursing Home held its ribbon cutting and grand opening last week at its new location on Texas 71. This facility is nothing short of amazing with beautiful touches throughout, spacious dining areas, comfortable, accessible rooms and an expanded therapy suite.

The 55,000 square-foot, $11 million facility has 120 beds and is located on a 6.5-acre field adjacent to Seton Smithville Regional Hospital on Texas 71. The campus has a nursing home, hospital, two clinics and the Smithville pharmacy.

Smithville is sure to become a regional draw for therapeutic services and elder care with this beautiful new state of the art facility.

New members

The chamber welcomes new members Kovar Land Services, Mike Hightower Realty, Ascension Seton Smithville Healthcare Center, Rio Social House, Smithville Athletic Booster Club, Robert Dougherty and Genesis Functional Medicine, Pupparazzi Pet Spa and Angels Boutique, Restoration Ranch and Calvary Baptist Church.

Job fair

The chamber held its biannual job fair with the Smithville Public Library and Texas Workforce Commission at the Smithville Recreation Center last week. Thank you to the many employers and job seekers who came out. We'll be scheduling another job fair in March 2020.

Halloween

A Spooktacular Halloween event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.Oct. 31. There will be ghost tours, a haunted house (at Second and Main streets in the old bank building – hosted by the Band Boosters), candy at all the participating merchant shops and a costume contest. Playhouse Smithville will show "Hotel Transylvania" at 6:30 p.m. Project Graduation will have a bounce house and a mini concession stand including drinks and snacks. For information: 512-237-2313.

Mark your calendars

The Airing of the Quilts and the Smithville Garden Club Home Tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.Nov. 9. Attendees can view quilts all over Smithville, from historic Main Street to the First United Methodist Church to the Church of Christ and various residences and businesses around town. The 29th annual Festival of Lights and Lighted Parade is scheduled for Dec. 7. Daytime events include indoor and outdoor arts and crafts market, live music, food vendors, tricycle races and a kids fest area. Ribbon cuttings/grand openings

The Butler Brothers Odd Jobs five-year anniversary ribbon cutting celebration will be held from 4 to 5 p.m.Nov. 5 at 602 Main St. Cohosted by the Bastrop and Smithville chambers of commerce.

Kovar Land Services will hold its ribbon cutting at 5 p.m.Nov. 14 at the chamber office, 100 NW. First St., Smithville. Food and beverages will be served.

The Smithville Recreation and Event Center, 106 Royston St., will celebrate its 20th anniversary with an open house and ribbon cutting from 6 to 8 p.m.Nov. 7. Food and beverages will be served.

Member events and announcements

Smithville Cheer Booster is selling shirts and will hold bake sales at the home games during October to provide awareness of Breast Cancer. Donations will be going to the Smithville Community Clinic as in past years to help provide lifesaving education, screenings and treatment. For information, call 512-963-8002.

Playhouse Smithville announced "Love Letters," A.R. Gurney's two-character play which follows the relationship between a stuffy white Anglo-Saxon protestant and free-spirited woman, throughout their lives from childhood to death, as chronicled in the letters they write to each other. The Smithville school district is looking for mentors to make a positive difference in the lives of students. Mentoring benefits the students, the school district and the community. Halloween fun at the Front Room Wine Bar, 116 Main St., Smithville, will be held at 7 p.m.Oct. 31. The 70s-themed event will feature disco music, disco balls and 70s trinkets. Drink specials will be offered. Doors open at 5 p.m.
