Monroe County History Center's Living with History program recognized

Herald-Times - 10/26/2019

Oct. 26--A local project designed to increase communication between people living dementia and their care partners received the Indiana Historical Society's 2019 Outstanding Collaborative Project Award.

The Monroe County History Center and Alzheimer's Resource Service of IU Health worked together on the Living with History program. The program is a series of museum-based dementia support programs at the Monroe County History Center.

"The proposal was innovative, collaborative and tremendously well-planned and presented," wrote Marcus Whited of Community Foundation in a letter of support for the project's award nomination. "But perhaps more critical than anything else, it addressed an issue that touches the heart of this community by supporting those dealing with dementia and those who care for them."

As part of the program, visitors can take part in dementia friendly events such as memory walks, where guests have the opportunity to share memories and stories about life in Monroe County. Visitors can also check out memory boxes, which are a small collection of objects centered around a topic or theme, to help spark conversations with people living dementia.

The program is supported through the 2019 Community Impact grant from the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County. The Living with History program is offered at no cost to visitors.

The next related event is a Halloween-themed Memory Lane Cafe program called Spinning Stories, set for 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the Monroe County History Center, 202 E. Sixth St.
