Dining with Diabetes educational series planned

The Truth - 4/19/2019

April 19-- Apr. 19--GOSHEN -- Diabetes is a serious and costly disease, but research has shown that those who learn to manage their blood glucose levels, exercise regularly and eat healthy can lower their risks of complications and lead a healthier and more productive life.

Purdue Extension Elkhart County is offering the statewide Dining with Diabetes series in May. Dining with Diabetes is a weekly class that runs for four weeks. The four classes will be offered during a morning session on Wednesday, May 1, 8, 15, and 29. The session is from 9 to 11 a.m. All classes will be held at the Purdue Extension Elkhart County Office on the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds, 17746 C.R. 34, Goshen.

The class is open to those with diabetes, and their family members and caretakers. The series costs $35 per person or $45 per couple and includes a notebook and printed materials. Registration is required and participants are encouraged to attend all class sessions.

Mary Ann Lienhart Cross, extension educator in Health and Human Sciences for Elkhart County, will teach participants how to prepare meals that are healthy, easy to prepare and tasty. Recipes will be demonstrated and participants will have the opportunity to taste. Participants will also learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, exercise, and how to understand common diabetes related medical tests.

Registration forms may be downloaded at http://www.extension.purdue.edu/elkhart under the Dining with Diabetes section or can be picked up at the Purdue Extension Elkhart County office. Reasonable accommodation to participate in this program can be arranged through the office at 574-533-0554.
